The ladies of WEEN are going on tour! I am a huge fan of WEEN and what the organization stands for. I have attended a few of their events in the past and have also volunteered with a few of the girls at an event in the Hamptons. Last week I found in my inbox an email with upcoming “I am WEEN” tour dates and wanted to share with the world. Take a look and catch up with the ladies of WEEN in a city near you……

The WEEN executive board and planning committees would like to announce the 2009 I AM WEEN tour!

I AM WEEN is an intimate, straight talk, interactive networking event in which 100-150 women (ages 18 on up, all races and occupations) are given the chance to have personal conversations with local inspirational women who are trailblazers in their perspective fields.  Each I AM WEEN event provides women with hand-ups, not hand-outs, on ways they can enhance their lifestyles and careers.  Each event will conclude with a priceless segment with TV personality, designer & attorney, Lauren Lake (www.laurenlake.com) on “how to balance careers and relationships.”

Each I AM WEEN event will be packed with useful information, fun segments including giveaways and raffle drawings to win jewelry, beauty products, books, gift cards and opportunities such as “lunch with an executive.”

BET Network’s Stephen Hill is Hosting a Party???

Posted by Mona-Elisa on March 31, 2009

stephen-hillIt looks as if BET’s Executive Vice President of Music Programming and Talent is hosting a party tonight at The Grace Hotel. Now, I don’t know exactly what to think of a major network’s EVP hosting a Tuesday night party, but it appears as if plenty of people will be lining up to get into the Grace Hotel later tonight. For those who don’t know who Stephen Hill is, he is the creative force behind the creation of many of BET’s largerts franchises: the BET Awards, 106 & Park, and College Hill.

So, it appears as if this event was a great success. Many familiar faces were in the building including Lil’ Mama, BET’s Alisha Renee, Model Christina Mendez, and of course Stephen Hill.

Third Annual “Women On The Move” School Tour

Posted by Mona-Elisa on March 26, 2009

The Third Annual “Women on the Move” School Tour launched this evening at NYU.  It is my first time hearing about this particular organization but it sounds like a great initiative with an even better mission. Women On The Move holds the  mission of informing, empowering, and educating young women. The program targets high school and college students, and provides awareness to these students about the vast career opportunities available to them.

The event this evening allowed students to hear from women that have made a name for themselves in their chosen career paths as a way to encourage, expose, and enlighten them on what is available for them to achieve. Gotta LOVE it!
Event Guest Speakers consisted of:
* Dee Vasquez: Radio Host Hot 97  (Moderator)
* Jazzy Joyce: Professional DJ ( djing)
* Danyel Smith: Editor-in- Chief Vibe Magazine
* Christina Mendez: Model
* DJ Beverly Bond- Black Girls Rock!
* Sharon Salamone: Director of Finance G-Unit Records

Landon Dias, son of Larry Dias and current cast member of BET Network’s newest reality series “Harlem Heights” announced on Thursday that he will be running for City Council of Harlem. The young leader made the announcement at 17 Below, located in Harlem (2163 Fredrick Douglas Blvd).

27 year old Landon appears to be following in the footsteps of his father, Larry Dias, who is a well known Community Leader in Harlem. He serves as a consultant for Harlem Congregations For Community Improvement, Inc. (HCCI), where he works with the Construction Opportunities Program, he helps people obtain their GED, learn construction skills and get jobs. He is also the president of the Uptown Democratic Club, where he started the organization’s youth division, along with other community activities.

I think Landon is someone to keep an eye out for. Wishing him all the best!

Supima Fashion Show

Supima Fashion Show

Supima Fashion Show

I attended the Supima fashion show which took place in one of NYC’s grandest venues, Gotham Hall. I was very intrigued by the creativity of the upcoming designers. The show consisted of three segments: Innovation in knits, Innovation in Denim and Chambray, and Innovation in Superfine Shirting. The runway show was the finale of a competition where young designers displayed pieces constructed with Supima Cotton.

The name Supima is an abbreviation of Superior Cotton, and the trademarked name is used to promote apparel made of 100% American pima cotton.

“Haiti: Hunger & Hope” an Exhibition of Photographs and Documentary Film by Nigel Barker

My favorite photograph of the night was the one to the right

renowned photographer Nigel Barker premiered his collection of photographs and screened his documentary film, “Haiti Hunger & Hope”, to raise money for the EDEYO Foundation. The EDEYO Foundation (pronounced Eh-Day-Yo and meaning to “Help Them”) was founded by Unik, nightlife impresario, with the mission of helping to feed and educate impoverished children in Haiti.

Last year, disregarding the US embassy’s warning to Americans traveling to the riot stricken country, Nigel Barker and his team set out on a journey to capture the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere as it has been troubled for many years with all forms of corruption. During his trip Nigel photographed and recorded the everyday life of Haitians as they battled extreme poverty, and hunger.

At last night’s event, held at the Milk Gallery (450 West 15th Street), DJ Cassidy entertained the crowd, and former America’s Next Top Model contestant, Brie, performed on-camera interviews. Guests circled the gallery examining Nigel’s Photographs and as promised on the invite, there was a special performance by a Haitian musician. All in all, I noticed that throughout the evening, people were deeply moved by the intensity and realism of the photographs hanging on the walls of the gallery. My personal favorite was one entitled “Dad”. It was a picture of a young man on crutches revealing a scarred wound on his stomach, while in the background you see a crying baby reaching out for him through a crowd of people. This photograph like all the others was very intense, moving, and all so real.

Nina Sky Helps Fila Launch “The Melrose”

Fila hosted a launch party for it’s new sneaker “The Melrose” Thursday evening at their Madison Ave store. Although it was raining, the event had a good show of people. The event location also added an intimate feel to the occasion, as people packed in throughout the night. One of my favorite publicists Bj Coleman made an appearance, and Nina Sky arrived looking really cute while DJ Radio Rose kept the music going.
